This is an important phase of our project, focused on addressing the needs of our children as they progress through their adolescent years and, ultimately, make their transition into independent living. While the Farm’s rather isolated location suffices for the children’s younger years, our adolescents need more of a mainstream experience of Honduran life, with additional case management of their personal and educational formation. For this reason, we will be moving our homes for adolescents, separated by gender, to the town of La Ceiba in 2006.
As the Farm children advance in age, it becomes critical that they live off site in order to learn the necessary life skills, independence and responsibility to become more integrated into Honduran society. We are committed to supporting our children throughout their academic or vocational education and their ongoing personal development. As our economic resources allow, we want to support our children so that they have the opportunity to achieve their goals and attain a level of personal and educational development that will support them throughout life. The only way to ensure that these children receive such nurturance is to provide it for them. That is our goal at Farm of the Child, and our Program for Independent Living will help us accomplish it.
For the first phase of the Program for the Independent Living, we will have two houses in La Ceiba (one for boys and one for girls). By living in La Ceiba, our teens will have a better opportunity to learn more life skills that will allow them to make a better transition into adulthood and independence. This includes involvement with local community members, businesses and the town parish, which has expressed a generous willingness to welcome and integrate our teens into the life of the parish.
Farm of the Child Honduras exists to provide for, nurture, and love our children. We are confident that God will bless this effort to provide His little ones with a good upbringing and education, both academically and spiritually, which is so essential in forming and transforming their lives.
